Here is a list of online books available on this site.
The Century Vocabulary Builder (, 1.4mb) by Garland Greever and Joseph M Bachelor (1922) provides timeless advice on how to build your vocabulary. The later chapters are particularly useful. We have converted the original hard copy book into this downloadable PDF.
According to Edwin Abbott in How to Write Clearly: Rules and Exercises on English Composition (1883), clear writing can be reduced to rules. The art of writing clearly is the main object of Abbott's rules and exercises. The HTML version of How to Write Clearly reproduces Abbott's rules. For both the rules and the exercises, download this pdf version:
The King's English by the Fowler brothers is still a benchmark for British English usage, even though some parts of the book appear a little outdated. We are gradually uploading the full-text of the 1906 2nd edition.
The Elements of Style: A Style Guide for Writers by William Strunk is a classic American English style guide. Later editions are often required reading in US high school and university composition classes. (Since this original 1918 edition is not as accessible as modern reprints, we have inserted page numbers from the 2004 reprint. For example, "[5] Introductory" shows that the introductory chapter starts on page 5 of the 2004 reprint. Although we have proofread our reproduction carefully, do not rely on our version as error-free; rather, consult the original source).
