GRE verbal prep need not be boring and mundane. There are many interesting GRE vocabulary games that you can play to increase your GRE vocabulary word list and improve your GRE verbal score. These are simple yet powerful games that will help you in increasing the number of GRE vocabulary words that you know. To play these games, you will need a partner and it is best that your partner is also preparing for the GRE test.

The simplest of all games is the Play First word game. As a child, you might have played this game with rhyming words. Twist it a little to play games with words that will appear in the analogy section of the GRE verbal section. Start off by saying a pair of words that relate to each other in some manner. Your partner has to respond by saying another pair of words sharing the same relationship. Keep pairing words with the same relationship until you run out of words. Then you can start off with a new relationship. The more players, the more fun the game becomes. When you take a GRE practice test, you will realize that you have no problems in solving the GRE analogies questions.

You are sure to have heard of and played Scrabble as a child and adult. Have you ever thought how Scrabble can help you with your GRE study? Scrabble is an interesting game and is real fun to play. Along with the fun, it will also help with your GRE verbal study. You will learn new words and also be able to use the other GRE words that you have already learned.

Word Find is another interesting GRE vocabulary game that you can play while preparing for the Graduate Record Exam. In this game, your partner will give a definition for you to match a word; or they might say a word for which you will have to find synonyms. You can also tweak the game a little to include antonyms.

Vocabulary games like these will help you remember words better than just reading a GRE study guide or a GRE vocabulary word list because of the principle of building vocabulary through elaboration. As the game heats up, it will get more and more interesting. You will also have the urge to find and learn new words for maintaining the spirit of the game. After every game, be sure to maintain a list. A list of all words used in a GRE vocabulary game will help you later in the GRE vocabulary review before the actual test. Or create a custom list with vocabulary-building software like the popular Ultimate Vocabulary.

You can also play games that require sentences to be completed. Sentences can be picked up from a good dictionary or from a book. Make sure that the sentences are not too simple. Tweaking the game a little, you can just list a word and ask your partner to form a sentence with the word. Unless they know the word’s meaning, they will not be able to form a sentence. A game such as this will greatly help in solving the sentence completion questions in the GRE verbal section.

As you can see, there are many interesting GRE vocabulary games that you can play. Playing games will make the GRE study more interesting than monotonous. It will also help you learn more GRE words than by studying words through the normal process. Games will also sharpen your memory power and help you recall words sooner. And don’t forget our own vocabulary game on this website, which includes some vocabulary words you might find on the GRE.
