Increasing your reading speed effectively is all about harnessing the vast potential of your mind.
Within your mind are infinite nets of synapses, the basis for all your thought, imagination, and inspiration, and the power of these synapses have never been completely tapped, for the simple reason that that power and processing capability is virtually infinite. Speed reading is so highly effective because it taps into this ability.
Actually, our bodies and minds both have a considerable ability to adapt. Say that a person does a job that demands that he or she process a lot of written matter. This person might find it difficult to keep up for a few weeks, but what will really happen if he or she sticks at it is that his or her ability will increase exponentially, just so long as he or she stays working at the job.
Before a month is out, if his or her ability to read was about 300 words or so before (which is the level of most average people), it will probably be between eight hundred to a thousand words. And all this without any speed reading training at all, an enhancement of ability caused purely by necessity alone.
However, it is possible to attain this same increase through good speed reading software or speed reading program, by subjecting a user to the same sort of pressure to improve.
One of the speed reading methods used to improve reading speed is known as sight reading, in which the eyes are trained to a wider focus, allowing them to absorb the text of not single words, or even a set of words, but in entire lines.
The eyes do not move in a sequence, from left to right, but rather almost at random, flicking down the page, absorbing the gist of a chapter in a fraction of the time a conventional reader would take. And the best part is that this ability takes no special talent, only special training.
Almost anyone, with the right training, could accomplish it. Of course, we have to make it clear here that sight reading only works when the detail of the text is not absolutely crucial. If you come to a paragraph full of facts and figures, for example, you will have to rely upon conventional reading methods.
And to remember all those facts and figures you'd probably have to rely on mnemonic memory keys. So sight reading is basically just suited to going through your correspondence, to examining records, and to obtaining a rough but accurate idea of the contents of any large volume of text, all things that can be very vital to a student or executive.
Of course, there are a good many other techniques to increase your reading speed besides sight reading, but it's an excellent place to start. There are a lot more techniques you can apply to your speed reading once you master this one, and when you apply two or more principles of speed reading together you'll find that you're reading speed improves to levels that are truly exceptional, and indeed, to speeds that might be far faster than anything you ever expected.
