Write Better English

Write Better English is a fast-growing community of learners and teachers of written English. A FREE resource, I want this website to connect people — people who love words and who can write well with people who want to improve their writing.

Download 101 FREE writing tips

TipSheets.gif Download my famous 101 Tips on Writing Essays, Articles, and Other Documents, completely FREE! (pdf.gif 299kb)

You no longer need to join the site to download the free tips, and there's no cost.

You can save the tips, print them, email them, and even use them as free content for your website or intranet. (Just don't say you've written the tips and don't remove the links!)

Improve your vocabulary

Writing well begins with a good vocabulary. Read articles on how to improve your vocabulary.

Write clearly

Try my FREE plain English tool. Also try software like StyleWriter, RightWriter, and MyWriterTools. Or try online writing courses such as Write101 or workshops on how to become a technical writer.

Read advanced texts

For advanced writers, I've reproduced some classic books such as The Elements of Style and How to Write Clearly. I'm gradually uploading The King's English (I'm up to page 164 of 370 pages). If you're a lawyer or law student who wants to improve your legal writing, then try specialist tools such as Win More Cases: The Lawyer's Toolkit.

Have fun with words

Learning should be fun. Share your funny English errors, read some mad libs, and contribute to a never-ending story (coming soon).

(Right: a funny English error: "Wanted — A room by two gentlemen 30 feet long and 20 feet wide.")
